Latest cat drama (Ingrid)

Post by MarkB »

I didn't post in health, as it is over (we hope)

On Monday morning, as usual, I saw all the cats. Ingrid was out and about doing her thing. A bit later, I was putting some clothes away in the attic bedroom. Ingrid often sleeps up there on a cotton comforter. I noticed blood stains on it - more than a few specks. I waited until she came back and checked her over, thinking she might have caught a claw or something. I found what looked like a 1" piece of raw flesh hanging from her bum, dripping blood. I called the vet. They were fully booked, but said they would squeeze her in at end of surgery. The vet said it was a nasty polyp and she had stripped it with all the licking. He said it would continue bleeding and she would continue licking until it was removed. The kept her there and operated under GA that day, with internal sutures. I collected her at 4.30. The nurse said to keep her in for 5 days (we negotiated down to 2 or 3  ). She was very woozy that evening, but by morning, she was back to her usual self, tearing around the house and crying to go out. Yesterday, I decided that the wound looks clean and she seems fine. I kept her in one more night and she now has freedom of the city. When I picked her up, the nurse said that they didn't really have any concerns, but they kept the polyp and asked if I wanted it biopsied. I said I was happy to do whatever they recommended. She said "Oh she insured anyway, isn't she? - you may as well, as you are still only going to pay the excess" - she said that Petplan prefer them to check any suspect samples anyway. I will probably hear next week, but pretty sure it is just a regular polyp.

That must have been a nasty shock - glad you could get it sorted so fast.

My Emily had trouble with a polyp in one ear about 6 months ago - she was with her foster carer at the time so I don't know that much about it apart from the fact that like Ingrid's it was bloody and messy, but since it was dealt with she's been fine and I hope it's the same for Ingrid.

Sounds like she's already on the road to recovery, all paws here crossed :)

Phew, I'm glad it all seems to have turned out OK and I wish her a full and speedy recovery. Never a dull moment, is there! :D

Funnily enough, I had a scare last night - I found bloody paw prints on the floor by the litter tray and then found a trail of blood on the window sill where they come in and out. Checked everyone .... couldn't find anything out of the ordinary ......... until I caught sight of Daz heaving the remains of a large rabbit from its cache near the window .....

Mark - all fingers and paws crossed that this is just a one-off polyp and Ingrid will get over it soon.

Helen - They don't do much for the blood pressure these cats, do they?!

Fingers crossed it was a one-off. Poor rabbit Helen. We had a couple of casualties last week (both Ingrid I think) On Monday before last, I had been up about an hour, I have a little table in front of the sofa, where I use my laptop. I put my foot under the table and touched what I thought was one of Ingrid's toy mice - but no, it was a dead baby bird. Not sure if it was a gift :? - then on the Wednesday, I was heading in from the garden just as she was scaling the olive tree just outside (bout 40ft tall). I sat down and heard a commotion outside, I turned round to see her dragging a collared dove down. It flapped away and Kasper took over, cornering it. Thankfully, something else had caught Ingrid's eye, which gave it a chance. I went out and yelled at them. Kasper ran off over the back fence and vanished for 8 hours (another big scare for me) I couldn't see any obvious damage, but it couldn't take off. I took it to the vet. They checked it over and said there was no obvious damage, but would give it a proper check later. Fran, one of the nurses, is our local wildlife rescuer, so she would have taken care of it. I didn't hear any more and meant to ask on Monday.

That's why we kept our budgie cage. It's now a recovery ward for stunned birdies. It is not always the cat, sometimes we get birds flying into the windows. he ones that survive are put in the cage with an old tablecloth over it and left until the cats are otherwise occupied. We also have a 'mouse bucket'!

How's Ingrid today?

She is fine thanks :D

She is asleep up in the attic bedroom. Now the flap is open again, she is happy to stay in most of the time. If it was on lockdown, she would probably be crying to go out

Ingrid coming round on Monday evening.

Lol that secretive little smile - my Molly does the same when she's feeling extra pleased with herself.

Ingrid looks great, Mark and what a beautiful girl, hope she stays well now :)

Both those photos are beautiful, Mark, but the second one is really good - 'cat chiaroscuro' I'd be tempted to call it ...if you make your own greetings cards that would be a winner :D

The vet left a message on my phone this afternoon to say that (as expected) it is a simple polyp and nothing to worry about :D - she is in for a check-up tomorrow, but almost seems a waste of time and energy - but obviously I will take her anyway

HaHa - Thanks, but I'm not a great photographer. I just have it set on auto - although having said that, I think I used manual focus for the first time ever for the bottom pic as the camera was focusing on the plants in the foreground. I got a camera for xmas about 4 years ago (Canon 550d) but have only taken cat photos with it
