Hi i have a pregnant cat who i can feel and really SEE the babies moving!!! she has been looking for a place to hide for over 2 and a half weeks now, i have places for her each the house set up for her... my question is why has she been looking for a place for over 2 weeks now??? she has no colustrum in her nipples but has a big belly she seems restless moving from one place to another then acts normal again she has had a scan and the vests can see at least 4 and the heart beats as well... is she close to having these babies or do i have a while??? if she has not colustrum then does this mean she is not close, also she has not licked fur away from her nipples and i am told if you SEE the babies really moving she is only 7 weeks ??? no nasty comments just help and advice will be nice xx ;)

i have no experience of pregnant cats unfortunately sorry. I would suspect she's just trying to find somewhere where she feels comfortable to have her kittens when the time comes - and it probably will be somewhere totally different to where you want them to be born. If she's happy within herself then leave her ;)

Hi Sacha
I don't think she is due, probably just checking out safe places to have her family! A neighbours cat made friends with us and decided to have her litter with us. Quite an experience! Perhaps your Vet could give an estimate of the due date?

Please let us know how you get on.

It's been so long since I've had the wonderful experience of my cat having a litter that I truly can't remember for how long she was restless before the birth (I do remember my Siamese girl trying to make a nest in my wardrobe out of crepe paper which dyed her face and mouth bright green!!). If your cat is restless and seems distressed, is straining with no result and crying, get her straight to the vet. It IS unusual, but not unheard of for a cat to be unable to give birth normally and to need a Caesarian section operation.

I also can't remember there being any milk or colostrum being obvious before the birth, but there was certainly plenty afterwards, once the kittens were there and stimulating her breasts. The kittens will soon let you know if there isn't any milk being let down.

Hopefully all is well and you'll soon have the wonderful experience of being able to observe one of life's most beautiful miracles. Please let us know how she gets on.

One of my cats was unneutered when I had her, and she soon found a place to have her kittens. I decided to put some sheets/towels down behind one of the armchairs in the bay window in the house. When she's ready (usually after 9 weeks) she will have them. All you need to look out for is the odd stray getting lost for the first few days, and to make sure she doesn't lie on one by mistake. She will go out for a break every so often an return within the hour for the next feeding.

Expect her to be quite active up until the actual day of birth. They come out fairly quickly and she will take care of them. It is essential that the mother has constant access to them.

After the first day it is not stressful at all, and is quite fun.

I decided to keep the kittens and the mother myself, so I've had them since literally the day they were born. As long as they have human contact and socialisation after a few weeks (when their eyes open) they should be fine.

When my two 18 year olds were born, on the day of birth the mother was very friendly with me. She was kneading me and I could see her sides contracting. It was about 2- 3 hours after being woken by her that she started to give birth.

It was such a long time ago now but I do remember being able to see the kittens moving for a good number of days before the actual birth.

As mum was a semi-stray we did not know how far along she actually was. We originally took her in so that she could be spayed after previously giving birth in a skip next door. Having no previous experience of cats my flat mate and I couldn't tell she was pregnant. My flat mate took her to the vet to be spayed and was told she was already pregnant, I don't remember being told how far along she was. This was all pre-internet. 6 healthy kittens were born.

Good luck with your girl, I hope everything goes well.
