Help to rehome a cat

Post by Mattc »

Hello,

I was just wondering if anybody could help me find somebody to rehome my parents' cat?

My parents live in Basingstoke and unfortunately my Dad passed away on 9th May and this has left my mum with their three year old female cat. The cat was very much my dad’s cat (after it was rescued following the previous keepers breaking up) and is not very sociable. She is not friendly towards my mum and has a tendency to hiss when my mum leaves or comes back to house. She will also sometime bite for no apparent reason.

She has had all of her vaccinations, she is neutered has had regular vet checks and appears to be in good health.

My mum does not like the cat (and the feeling appears mutual!!) and does not have the funds available for vets bills etc now that my dad has passed away.

Could somebody please advise me on what to do with this cat? Obviously this is a very stressful time for my mum and issues with the cat are really not helping. I have tried the cat protection league and we are on the waiting list, I have left three messages with the Basingstoke/Andover RSPCA sine 12th May and I am yet to receive a response. I have spoken to the RSPCA in Leicester (where I live) who are very good and I have used them for training my rescue dog etc but they can’t take an animal from outside of Leicestershire.

I am unable to home the cat due to my other pets and we have no family members who can. My mum is going to ask the vet to have the cat put down if I can’t find an alternative, I am very keen to avoid this happening.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Matt

Have you posted on social networking sites or on sites such as Preloved, Gumtree, Pets4Homes etc?

If not I'd really suggest you do so!

Good luck and I really hope you find a home as putting a pet down just because it is a hindrance or is unwanted is atrocious!

Thanks for your advice.

I will try the sites you have suggested.

The problem we have is that she does have a tendency to bite my mum for no apparent reason (before I get 36 replies saying to make sure it isn't a health issue she has been checked by a vet regularly and is in good health). She will be 'fussing' somebody and will bite them for no reason, sometimes whilst they are stroking her and sometimes when they are not so it would appear it is not a pain response.

I appreciate that having any animal put down for other reason that health is atrocious (I have a dog and rabbit myself) which is why I have spent the last few weeks trying to rehome her, my mum has lost her husband of 50 years and having a cat who is aggressive towards her really isn't helping her situation. This isn't a matter of convenience.

Thanks again.

It sounds like she is biting due to over-stimulation, so keeping fuss to a minimum will reduce the biting a lot.

Hi,

She bites if she is being stroked or not being stroked and this is when she has approached you.

She doesn't 'nip' she bites hard enough to draw blood.

She was a rescue cat and arrived with issues and looks to me like she wasn't socialised at a young age.

Hi, I'm so sorry for your family loss and it must be hard for your mum right now.

If you do need to rehome the cat though please read through this link and be careful about advertising on classified sights. This link has the best and safest advice on rehoming a cat, which is preferably through family or friends or a rescue:

http://www.catchat.org/rehome.html#rehome" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Best of luck.

Thank you Janey,

I will have a look on the link.

I am trying to get the cat rehomed through the proper processes which is why I tried the cat protection people and the RSPCA.

I have a rescue dog and rabbit myself but can't take the cat as my daft border collie would almost certainly on have one eye after a day in the house with her!

I am sure we will get there in the end. The lady from the cat protection league suggested this site so I thought it was worth a go.

Thanks again
