Need to find new homes for two cats

Post by Crista »

Hello, A couple of years ago we took in two cats from a relative. They are lovely tabby cats sisters between 3 and 4 years old. They are indoor cats because we have a busy road nearby. Not sure how to go about re homing them, know advertising on sites like Gumtree is not recommended. My husbands asthma is growing worse and come summer becomes a nightmare with all the loose fur. Any advice offered will be welcomed.

Thank you,

Welcome to the forum and firstly thank you for taking the two cats in, even if unfortunately it didn't work out.

For rehoming your best bet is to contact the local charities such as Cat's Protection (assuming you are in the UK), even if they don't have space to take them in they do normally have a direct homing scheme where they will try and find a suitable new home and do a home check while the cats stay with you, that way you know they will be going to a good home. Other local charities might offer a similar service. it would also get them on the waiting list should space become available at one of the charities. Letting any charity have some good, recent photos will also help them advertise them.

For the allergy I would suggest getting some 'cat wipes' specialist, unscented wet wipes for cats formulated so that they won't irritate the cat. Used daily they can help reduce the dander from the cat's skin which is the source of most cat allergies rather than the actual fur. While rehoming might be the preferred solution they might make life a little better for your husband until a new home can be found. Also as fellow asthmatic, if you can get him to go to the doctor a change in his inhaler might also help prevent attacks while the cats are still with you.

Most if not all Cat Rescue centres are full and cats need to go on a waiting list which could be many months. I have asked family but no one wants to take two cat on and think we were stupid at our age (70 plus) for taking them on. At a real loss now, any advice very welcome. I am in the UK by the way.

My local cat rescue says there is a waiting list of homes offered for indoor cats as they don't come up for rehoming very often. I was lucky to be matched with mine very quickly, but was warned it could be months. I didn't have home checks because she was a home-to-home (so her owner was responsible for being satisfied I would take good care of her cat) so there was no adoption fee either, though I did make a donation for their dating agency service! Maybe they are short of indoors because they never let kittens go to indoor homes.

You're not stupid you are kind and tried your best, don't let anyone put you down for that. Hope you have found homes for the girls, if not, by all means message me and if you are either close enough or able to travel I'll be happy to put you in touch with the rescue who helped me.

Is it possible if you clean the fur, say, from the couch and other furniture, then your husband's asthma will get better?
