Megacolon

Post by Laurakartus »

My 13 year old was diagnosed a year ago with Megacolon. The specialist vet suggested that she continue eating Hills crumbles and that I use a syringe every day to inject Cisapride into her mouth (a very expensive drug which she absolutely hated the taste of). I was distressed beyond words as this daily treatment resulted in me having to always be around to medicate her and my poor cat being stressed out of her mind. After much research, I changed her diet to soft food (Royal Canin Easy Digest) as it just made sense that soft food would digest easier than hard crumbles. In addition, I imported a gentle laxative from the US called "Miralax" (I live in South Africa and this product isn't available in this country). half a teaspoon every 3 to 4 days mixed in her soft food and she is now a happy cat. The product has no taste so she eats it without any problem. Not saying this is going to work for all kitty cats with Megacolon disease but, it's worth a shot - you're be able to up the dose if you see your cat is struggling and showing signs of discomfort. On occasion she also gets bit of "Laxapet" on my finger to eat - its a laxative paste sold at most vets.

A poster on here had a cat which suffered from a megacolon, and he had good results with Royal Canin Fibre Response dry food

I myself am a big fan of the various pastes available without prescription, as most cats seem to really like them, and anything they're happy to lick off a finger has to be worth trying before attempting pills or liquids forced down their throats

Sorry. Not sure what I'm doing. I understand that this is a 'thread' and I might be breaking rules. I've been using and working with computers since the 70s, but forums boggle my mind. I saw your post about female megacolon and Miralax etc. I have a 19 year old that I rescued when he was 15. I don't know if he had megacolon before I 'got' him or if I did something wrong with his food. However, I did accidentally discover a pseud0-miracle. Not perfect, but combined with Cisapride and Laculose, seems to work. His poops are almost normal, but he chooses to take care of that aspect of his business under my bed. I don't care about that. So long as he can poop relatively normal poops. I can house clean!!! ps.... he always tinkles in his litter boxes (I have four of various sizes, shapes and litter types)!

My sister's cat has megacolon, which they treat with Hills dried food with a teaspoon of cod liver oil on it to keep her bowels mobile. For a while they also had to give her daily enemas, which they learnt to do themselves, but she's been fine on this diet regime for a few years now.
