Polyp in ear.

Post by Catfan5 »

6yo Alfie went for a check up two weeks ago and the vet found a polyp deep in his ear, confirmed by a fellow vet. So I've been cleaning the ear on her advice until yesterday so she could see the polyp more clearly without the waxy bits in there. She said it had changed colour and said Alfie would need surgery to remove it but in the meantime to give him Otomax drops twice a day to see if they would shrink the polyp first. I've looked online and can't see that Otomax is used to shrink ear polyps so I'm wondering if the vet is certain it is a polyp at all. She said she has only seen polyps in older cats but I read that they usually occur in young cats 1-4yo. Has anyone had experience of this at all? Going back in two weeks for a follow up. Unfortunately I'm a 'googler' which isn't always a good thing..

do you have insurance for her? it reads as if the operation to remove an ear polyp in an older cat is uncommon and expensive, and I am wondering if referral to a specialist veterinary hospital might be feasible, where there is more likely to be an vet who has dealt with this condition before

My Harry (he's 4) has a polyp in his ear, but thankfully right at the entrance to the ear tucked between the flaps. It looks very similar to a medium sized tick, same shape and grey/blackish colour, but it's hard and doesn't move.

I took him to the vet this Saturday gone and they diagnosed it as a polyp and he's now booked in for the 29th of this month for it to be removed. I wasn't given anything to put on it.

And reading up on Otomax, maybe Alfie has an underlying ear infection which could be the cause of the polyp?

Thanks for your replies Kay and Ria. He is insured thank goodness. He doesn't have an infection so am a little puzzled unless she is making sure it is actually a polyp even though her colleague thought it was a polyp too. The vet said the op for Alfie would mean removing part of the ear canal to reach it and he would have an external scar. I would think it should be done by a specialist vet to remove all of it and not just the visible part which makes it more complicated. Sounds awful, I'm so hoping she's wrong but we'll know more in a couple of weeks. Fusses to Harry Ria and hope his op goes well.

Nearly three weeks on and now I'm confused! Alfie reacted to the Otomax as if it was hurting him as it went down into the ear canal so stopped giving it after a few days. The vet said the polyp has reduced a little and changed colour, but will grow again in time so the op was booked for 8/9. I felt very uneasy about him having an op to remove something I think the vet is still unsure about, sort of gut feeling. So I took him to a different vet for a second opinion yesterday and he could only see a little redness and a tiny amount of fluid which he said was likely to be left from the ear drops. He couldn't see any sign of a polyp or mass at all... :? My husband is very anti putting Alfie through an op like that and if there is nothing to remove, so am I. I will have to speak to my usual vet about cancelling the op and monitoring Alfie instead. When I look at this online a polyp looks fairly obvious even if tiny. Also Alfie had no symptoms before or since diagnosis.
If anyone has had experience of ear polyps or problems with their cats ears I would like to hear your opinions.

I'd leave well alone, until or unless he starts to show any problems with his ears - which is usually fairly obvious, because they shake their heads, scratch and paw at the ear

just cancel the op via reception - say the problem seems to have resolved - if she is busy she will hardly register you have cancelled

Thanks Kay, simple solution :) I've always trusted this vet but this time we both felt really uneasy. We would be straight down to the vets if any symptoms started before the next general checkup in January.

My cat had ear polyps that were horrible. He was bleeding and smelled and had gunk oozing out of his ear all of the time. The vet said he needed a total ear canal removal. They wanted 5000 dollars for the surgery. I tried CBD oil first and it is miraculous. It cleared up his ear. No more smell, blood or gunk oozing out of his ear. Try CBD oil first for you cat. Get the drops and give her some every day. I bought 500 mg pet hemp oil and I gave the dose for dogs because he was pretty bad. It doesn’t get them high. He even has a shiny beautiful coat now. Please give it a try if your cat is suffering. I had amazing results and can’t believe how well it has worked.

Polyps are quite obvious and usually cause irritation scratching and infection depending on how advanced most vets should be able to remove them and part or full ear canal removal its not a specialist thing have never ever know drops to reduce them though have several cats with them to varying degrees all have been fine after removal

Did you put them in his ear or orally? My rescue has a pretty bad ear polyp and I was wondering if CBD oil would work! Thanks!

I gave my cat hemp oil for pets and I gave it to him orally. He is completely healed up. There is no sign of the ear polyp and he is a new cat! He feels so good and is back to his spunky old self. Give it a try!

I found this forum searching in vain for help regarding a bleeding ear mass/polyp in my cat's ear! Wendyl, can you tell me if you used CBD oil or HEMP oil? I am seeing both online, Amazon only sells the hemp, but I'm not sure which would work better? I want to try this! My cat is almost 9 years old and I'm not looking to do expensive surgery if at all possible! Thanks in advance!

Lorra,
I’m sorry for the confusion. I used hemp oil. I’m sure cbd would work too but I bought hemp oil on amazon. I bought 500 mg. For pets and I gave my cat a full dropperful for about three weeks and then I cut it in half. I’m on my second bottle and I just give him about 1/4 to maintain his ear. It’s completely gone and he’s healthy and happy. No more smell or gunk shaking out of his ear. He acts like he feels so much better and he looks beautiful. It worked beautifully! I wish more vets would suggest hemp oil for polyps. I know they recommend it for arthritis but it can help with ear polyps too and I’m sure other things as well. Good luck. I hope it works as well for you as it did for me! 😺

Hi. Newbie here. Just following up to see if the hemp oil worked for your cat. My 14 year old has a polyp in her ear that is bothering her.
