wont come out from behind the sofa and under the bed

My friend now has 2 male cats from cat protection she has had them since Tuesday ,one seems to be settling in but still quiet shy,the other just keeps going behind the sofa ,she has tried all sorts to coax him out but he just keeps going back behind there ,what is the best thing for her to do ,this is stressing her out.

this is not at all uncommon - he is frightened and the one thing he wants at the moment is to hide away and be totally ignored - so the worst thing is to keep trying to interact with him, which just stops him feeling safe in his chosen hideaway

if your friend just makes sure he has access to food, water and a litter tray, and pretends he is not there, he will venture out when he feels safe - they always do

I completely agree with Kay, this is a very common reaction to a new environment and he just needs to be allowed to venture out in his own time.
