To get or not to get? what to dooo... :(

Post by Maxthecat »

I stay on my own now and I really want a cat to keep me company but I have a really strong bond with my cat that is still with my parents. I've basically showed him as much affection as I can all the time and he really loves me, and me him, so i think if i got another cat he would feel replaced because he doesn't stay with me and thats cruel. so i should just not get one do you think so too?

I think it's really important to know if you're ready for a cat, even if you've owned one in the past. I spent a lot of time deciding if I wanted one and researching if it was a good idea. I think I made a good choice but it doesn't come without its problems.

At the moment I think you're looking for a cat that's like your parents one. You need to understand, all cats are different. Even the same breeds can have totally different personalities. You will never replace one cat with another, just like you'll never replace a friend with another.

If you are really serious about getting a cat I would recommend you ask yourself these things:

Am I personally ready for a cat? - Lots of people buy pets on whims because they feel they need companionship in some form. You need to step back and think rationally about if you want this because you want to give a cat a home, or just for yourself.

Am I ready to deal with a cat if it is sick? - Cats do get sick and they do need attention, sometimes a lot. Are you financial able to get it the treatment or medication it needs in the future?

Is my home cat proof? - Cats wreck everything, it's a common fact. Sometimes you get the odd one that doesn't but they're few and far between. If your cat manages to get it's claws into something important, how would you feel about that?

If my cat and I don't bond, what am I going to do? - Sometimes cats don't bond with their owners. It's sad but it's a fact. However it was your decision to make this cat part of your home. Are you going to discard it because it's not what you wanted?

Am I financially able to buy my cat the things it needs? - As mentioned, cats require a lot of money. They need food, litter and toys to keep them happy, and that's just on the surface. Are you financially able to keep your cat happy and safe throughout their life?

Am I going to be around for my cat when they need me? - Are you a free spirit that likes to take off places and explore? Then you need to make sure your cat is cared for while you're gone. Cats need stable environments to keep them happy. They will not love you for dumping them willy nilly.

If I need to change anything in my life, will my cat still be a key part of that? - People that have just moved change a lot in their early life. They move again, they meet partners, they change jobs and so on. You need to say to yourself "Am I in a stable environment for a cat?"

A lot of people think owning a cat is easy. No, it's not. They are living, breathing beings that need love. They don't deserve to be dumped and they have their own wants and needs just like people. I often to say to people "if you're ready for a puppy then you're ready for a child". Well, if you're ready for a child, you're ready for a cat.
