Sinus SCC - Just wondering what to expect in the coming weeks

Post by thewayiseethings »

My 16 yo Ragdoll Rowdy was just diagnosed with a facial SCC tumor in his sinuses. For the past 1-2 years, he's been pawing at his mouth and slowly lost all the whiskers on one side. Lately he began itching his ears a lot too. The vets couldn't find anything wrong. After an extensive dental surgery in January in which 10 teeth were pulled and he still continued pawing and scratching, I had a follow up with a dental specialist. When the specialist could not find a problem with his teeth, I pressed because of the behavior. She did a head x ray and most of the inside of his face behind the nose, up to the cranial plate is invaded by tumor. He looks good from the outside, no ulcers or deformities.

She told me its not treatable at all, its at least the size of an egg at this point. So he's on Gabapentin and that is helping with the scratching/pawing. I think he might be starting to lose his eyesight and hearing. His eyes are cloudier looking than before. Otherwise, its hard to tell how he is. He's less restful than he was a few weeks ago and is caboose is pretty wobbly.

I'm just wondering what to expect going forward. The vet said 6-8 weeks and I have a feeling that's right, but he's beaten the odds before. He's been in stage 1 kidney for 5 years.

Here he is at age 9 (I guess I can't do an image) so a link must do: http://macroblume.zenfolio.com/p1000136316/e4c18e1ae

I'm sorry to hear this, I have no experience with sinus SCC, but I lost a cat to oral SCC, sadly it is an aggressive cancer. Metacam can help slow things down but don't know if he can have that with gabapentine.

Enjoy your time with him, spoil him and take plenty of pictures for memories
