New to cats! Walking Dandruff? Cheyletiellosis Mites

Post by CharlieBook »

Hi there

i am looking for some advice. i am new to cats (7 days of experience!). A colleague of mine found a stray cat had given birth to 4 little kittens in her garden. She took them in and looked after them for 9 weeks.

She wanted to find them all (including the mother) loving homes, so my husband and I agreed to take 2 and picked them up at just over 9 weeks last Friday. We took them or a check up to the vet on Monday to get their first innoculation and the vet noticed "dandruff" on them, but wasn't sure if it was a parasite. Given their weight, she wasn't overly keen to give them anything too strong, so used a spray on them to alleviate the infestation.

Since then though, the mites have got worse and reading up on what it may be, i am worried that the mites are all over the house (and they live for 10 days away from the host), so if we treat the kittens as soon as they are big enough, the mites could be all over the house and reinfest them :( can anyone help in how to combat this? and when we can treat them properly? the vet gave us pestigon(?) will that do the trick?

Thanks in advance :D

Firstly, congrats on your two new family members! You can get sprays to treat the house, but I'm not too experienced with kittens, so it might be best to ring the vets and just get them to recommend a spray that would be safe for them. And hoover, the hoover is your friend in these situations, but make sure to empty the bags to get any parasites caught out of the house. Some people put a flea collar in the hoover bag, which might also work on mites.
