Letting my cats outside

Post by Laijas »

Hi all,

Recently moved with my 2 young cats ( just turned 2). I posted a few weeks ago about different ideas on letting them out. I was worried about letting them out because of how noisy it is here, compared to our old house. I'm worried they will get spooked and run away.

I'm just after some advice on the best way to let cats out after a move. So far, they have been in the new house 3 and a half weeks. I've been letting them out in garden with a harness and lead on to get used to the smells and noises. That's going well although they do try and jump the fence, with me watching I stop them going over.

I'm going to build a small cat run with a tall big for them to sit and watch over the fence, so they can see where the noise is coming from....which I'm hoping will get them used to the noises, if they can see what's causing it.

After that, would you say it was safe to let them out properly? They are used to roaming and already clearly want to go further than the garden but I'm not happy letting them out now without getting used to the area really.

Is this a good way of gradually letting them out? And gives them the best chance of finding home etc...

What's the standard way of letting cats out? I know you should wait around a month, but would you then just let them out or do it gradually like what I'm planning?

Thanks :)

When I first let cats out I usually do it five or ten minutes before dinner time, go out with them for a few minutes and then call them in with me when I go in to do their food. Repeat for a bit lomger the next day, and then really play it by ear - so much depends on the individual cat, but at least I know they know the way back in. Good luck! :)
