Should I be worried about Casper's pee clumps? They seem too big to me

Should I be worried about Casper's pee clumps? They seem too big to me

Post by Joe_Danger »

Hey guys, it's been a while.
All 3 of my cats are doing great, no worries there
They get along beautifully, their mom loves them to pieces and well, everyone is happy and healthy...or so it seems on the surface.

But Casper's amount of urine worries me and vets here aren't too keen on doing bloodwork and such saying that if he behaves normally and eats normally there's nothing to worry about, my vet DOES want it checked for ease of mind too so she is in the process of arranging it with a place that has the equipment for that.

Casper's pee clumps are drastically bigger than my other cats' pee clumps.

Kala and Casper will be 10 months on the 9th, so they're still young for kidney problems BUT, there's one huge concern I have regarding Casper.
The guy he spent 3 months with loved him alright, but did not take proper care of him and he was returned very skinny and borderline malnourished to me back in May with stomach and gas problems, we quickly fixed him up and he gained weight in no time but he's had bigger pee clups since he came back. I worry his kidneys may have been messed up there either due to eating something bad or not eating enough.

Just a quick overview:
- Casper will be almost 10 months old on the 9th
- he weighs 4.3 or 4.6Kg (around 8 pounds in American I believe, dunno, too lazy to convert)
- he exclusively eats wet food, very rarely dry.
- He eats about 300g a day of wet food give or take and maintains his weight, he has a normal appetite and is as active as a persian his age should be imo
- He pees 2 times in 24 hours, sometimes 3

This is the size of his latest pee clump, granted he only pees 2-3 times in 24 hours but that's how much all my cats pee and have far less urine.

That litter box I moved to pic in so I could take a better pic is huge, he originally did his business in the other litter but i moved it here for comparison sake, those few pee chunks scattered about are from the same piece

He is a big guy, here he is compared to his mom back in August, but he isn't THAT much bigger

Here is Milla, his mom giving him a good cleaning, again this is either from August or the end of July

Again this is from August, I haven't had the chance to take a pic of him recently but while bigger now he isn't drastically bigger

Sorry I'm coming with a problem after all this time, honestly all was and is well with the cats but this definitely rises some red flags to me

EDIT: I'd just like to clear one thing up, I know I sound overly paranoid and I'm ashamed of posting stuff like this all the time here, but trust me guys 99% of the time I'm perfectly happy and content with my cats.
It's just that weird stuff happens sometimes and I'd like to put my mind at ease when it does, and since Casper's pee clumps have been drastically bigger than those of my other cats I felt like asking and providing as much detail as possible. I'm sure it's nothing and just all the wet food he eats.

Hi Jo ESP was only thinking about Kala & Casper the other day. Can't comment on the peeing but sure others with more experience will provide advice. And this forum is for concerns & support. Vivian

Hi there Joe nice to hear from you again. Casper has grown into a lovely boy. :D

If he seems alright in other respects, then I wouldn't worry about the amount of pee he is producing. Perhaps, to put your mind at ease, you could get him checked out. But, from the sound of it, he is fine.

I worry because I seldom see Bob pee - he hates the litter tray and will go outside to pee (even in awful weather  ) But in every respect he is also a fine young lad.

Gracie, on the other hand, could poo for Ireland!

Thanks guys!
My vet said she is going to arrange for us to have him checked out since the usual place that did bloodwork for both people and cats now won't do cats anymore out of nowhere so that messed up a lot local vets.
Now the reason I was worried is because Anastasia, the cat I lost to CRF showed absolutely no signs of illness until the very end and her pee clumps were about this size too and she was around 4.5Kg as well lol

I really appreciate the input

Most of mine 'go' outside so it's hard to keep track of their 'productions', but I do know that they vary enormously. Some differences can be explained by their various ailments (all being older cats) but also some cats just do like to drink more than others, or eat more wet food rather than dry, without there being an actual medical cause. I hope he's fine, I'm sure he is. :)

You have two beautiful cats there from the photos.

Getting the bloods done to alleviate any worries is always worth while, but to me it just sounds like he is one of those that goes less often and produces a lot. If he seems to be constantly drinking as well (or drinking unusual things, one of my previous cats started drinking from my glass of blackcurrent squash, she was later diagnosed as diabetic) then I would be more concerned.

One of my current cats, while a lot older 12-13 years roughly, always produces big clumps when she uses the litter tray, they make your lad's look small. There have been times I have had to use two scoops to lift them out. There's nothing wrong with her, it's just her way.

The one thought I have had is that you say one of the previous owners didn't take proper care of him. If that included not cleaning the litter tray regularly he might have got into the habit of holding on as using the litter tray was unpleasant but he knew he should. I'm not saying you don't clean it regularly, just that habits are hard things to break.

Warning - biological speculation coming up! :D And I'm not at all qualified, but... As I understand it, in general with humans, males pee less often than females, and produce more urine when they do. It's a result of whether your reproductive organs are on the outside or the inside. If inside, the bladder has less room and has to be emptied more often. Joe, if I remember rightly you have 2 female cats and just the one male - and isn't he bigger than the other two anyway? So it might simply be a question of Caspar's "plumbing" and his physical size that makes his output look different from the other two. But you're right to get it checked out if it's worrying you.

Good point on both of the above posts! Especially him not wanting to use trays that aren't clean!
You see ever since Casper was a baby, when they first started using litter he wouldn't go if the litter wasn't clean, he'd sit there and sniff it but not go or make his way to...at the time for them too big to get into litter box :)
The guy who temporary adopted him did say he would leave him home all alone for 2-3 days so maybe that did have a role to play in this. In fact just the other day the small litter hadn't been clean yet, we clean them once a day and Casper just sat there sniffing it without getting in so he went to the big one (the one in the pic) instead.

He is very very picky about how clean the litter trays/boxes are but he's never gone outside or anything
