Hi All,
I know many of you have been following my previous thread about Daisy, but I thought I would start another specifically relating to use of steroids. Has anyone got any experience of steroid use in cats and whether there is anything I should be worried about? I hate putting Daisy on meds as I constantly worry about side effects etc, but many of you will know from my last thread, that there is not really any other alternative for Daisy.
I haven't started the steroids yet as I need a bit of breathing space after hearing the news on Daisy on Monday before having to worry about something else too.
Best Wishes
Vic

Re: Use of steroids
As I mentioned in the previous thread, our Patch had steroids when she was diagnosed, it was an injection I think rather than tablets. It didn't really do her any good, she had already lost the will to live, it made her a bit more hungry and thirsty, enough so that she dragged herself to the food and water bowls, but you could see she had had enough. Which was why next evening we called it a day for her.
As you can see I can't say much about the side effects she wasn't on it long enough, but knowing what Daisy is going through already, you might want to make sure that food isn't left down for her to gorge herself on, little and often might be the only answer for her.
The other one is different steroids might have different effects, Patch was given her's to try and encourage her to eat, Daisy's is to stop her bringing it back up.

Re: Use of steroids
I've used steroids for intestinal lymphoma twice, although the second time the vet had misdiagnosed Molly, so she ended up on them for years, with no side effects. Mabel had the opposite to Daisy, food was going through her, and steroids didn't help. It's worth a go though.

Re: Use of steroids
My old Minnie was on steroids (prednisolone) for IBS for the last couple of years of her life. I wasn't aware of any negative side effects and the increased appetite it gave her was hugely beneficial as she was becoming very thin (she was nearly 20 when she finally went).
