Hello. I have two boys who we rescued around 6 months old, which are now named Batman and Robin. Both boys are from the same litter and were loving brothers for the first few months. We immediately started their shot process once we got them. They began to get aggressive with one another, so my husband and I decided to separate them. After many talks with our vet, we understood that the aggression came from testosterone and not yet being neutered. Due to us not being able to take them in the same car (did not want to make them too mad before the vets office had to deal with them), we had to make two separate appointments for the boys to be neutered. A week before Robin was due to be neutered I was walking by and he attacked my hand. To the extent that I had to go to urgent care to get stitches and am scheduling my appointment with a specialist to see what can be done about the nerve damage that was done. Then a week later Robins appointment came around and I picked him up to put him in the crate to go to the vet and he automatically attacked my other hand. Robin was a sweet cat prior to all of these events, and we did make the mistake of waiting a couple months later than we should have to have him neutered due to our wedding. I felt completely responsible for his behavior, which is why I couldn't give up on him. My Husband (who he has never attacked) got him in the crate for the rescheduled appointment our vet gave us that same week. It has been three weeks since he was neutered and he is meaner than ever. He has become more territorial by standing on our bathroom sinks as well as our hightop kitchen table. Robin has always begun hissing at my husband, which he has never done to he nor I. The vet said that Robin is in great health and that the testosterone will take 60 days to be completely out of his system, but we should see progress within a few weeks. Unfortunately, his behavior is getting worse.
I apologize for the long post it has been a tough journey with this guy for the past couple of months. We love Robin dearly and am desperate for any advice that can help us keep him. My husband and I will be moving from a house to an apartment within a few months and I am afraid that if Robin doesn't get better we will be forced to rehome him, which will break my heart. Thank you all in advance.
How can I get my sweet boy back?
Re: How can I get my sweet boy back?
This sounds really distressing for all of you, including poor Robin. It sounds like the trust bond has been badly damaged between you, and suggest you have a word with your vet to recommend a good behaviourist who can see the dynamic between you and find a way to help him calm down again, particularly before, during and afternoon your move, as the move really won’t help things.
