Ben
Ben... the story so far....
Written by his foster carer

Ben, the handsome biggest scardy cat that I have ever had the pleasure to meet- and the biggest challenge so far.

Ben appeared in the local feral colony and use to cry whilst hiding under a car and wait for his fellow cats to eat before he was brave enough to join in. He gained the trust of his feeder but once captured, presented like a wild animal and we originally thought this big softie was a feral. He hissed and growled at the vet but needed to be handled to be treated for an eye infection. Slowly he again gained the trust of his feeder. Ben was introduced to me after 2 weeks and came to live in my spare bedroom, firstly in an igloo type bed in a large cage. Again, he hissed and swore at me for 1 day. He came out for food and started to let me stroke him. Eventually he came out for affection and could not get enough of it, whilst purring his little head off. He would not however set foot outside of his cage despite the door being wide open. When I got him out to take the cage away he was so scared he wet himself. Ben loved the safety of his igloo and I would sit and talk to him for hours in his room whilst he came out for fussing and brushing (which he loves). The door to the spare room stayed wide open and Ben would never venture out. Ben would not jump on anything either, choosing to stay on ground level. Putting him on the cat gym or window sill resulted in him leaping back down. Ben had no interest in toys, just lots of stroking.
I started laying Dreamies across the landing to entice him out. My first success resulted in him doing a lap of my bedroom to explore before realising he was out of his comfort zone and running back to the safety of his room. I had a move around in the room and Ben stopped using his igloo, preferring to sit under a stool by the door to see who walked by. I started placing Ben in the corridor and letting him walk back to his room. Before Xmas I put the igloo into the lounge, sprayed some pet rescue into a cat carrier and bought Ben downstairs in it and let him out. He hid behind the settee the first time and again wet himself when I pulled him out to go back upstairs. The second time he found his igloo and stayed in it for the evening. Ben slowly started coming out of It and sitting on the rug. He started playing with a fish on a stick and quite happily grooming himself and rolling on his back. I stopped using the carrier and started carried Ben down in the evenings in my arms, enticing him back upstairs at the end of the night with his food.
Ben now prefers being downstairs to upstairs. He creeps back upstairs if he is spooked by people he does not know or the vacuum cleaner. Ben loves flopping on the rug in the lounge and preening himself and rolling from side to side on his back. He loves fusses and brushing and has now discovered a game on the i pad called ‘mouse for cats’ that he can watch for hours whilst purring away. He also loves playing with his feather on a stick. He can also be quite vocal and demanding for attention, all of which he deserves.
I believe that Ben may have lived In someone’s shed for years being fed and that his feeder either died or moved away. I do not believe that Ben has ever lived in a house before. He was spooked by the t.v. to start with and will not jump up on anything to explore. At first he would not look outside the patio window and showed very little curiosity in anything. He has now ventured outside several times for very short spells but one of the 5 cats that live a few doors down usually appear and Ben comes running back inside.
After constantly picking him up and putting him next to me on the settee, Ben now loves to snuggle and rest his head on my lap for the evening. Ben now has his food in the kitchen but will run back to the safety of the lounge if he hears a noise or is spooked. He is used to the people now in the house and will mostly stay on the rug if someone walks in but get too close and he dives into his igloo or runs upstairs. For me, he comes out and I can do anything with him.
Ben was already neutered when he came to us. He has had 3 teeth removed including 2 canines and dribbles quite a bit when purring. His lips are black which is perfectly harmless and common in ginger cats just like freckles in humans. He has been chipped and is approximately 10 years old. He is also a carrier of the flu virus and will sometimes sneeze and blow bubbles from his nose. This occurs more when he is stressed as does the occasional pulling out of his fur (this has only happened twice).
So, Ben needs a quiet home with no children and his new owner will need lots of patience whilst Ben settles in to his new surroundings (his igloo will be coming with him). Ben will need to be kept inside for at least 2 months until is is use to you, with little chance of escape, and will need to be the only cat in the home (we tried to introduce him to another cat but Ben was having none of it). Ben will need a spare room to settle into where he can feel safe before being slowly introduced to other family members.
