Dustin

Please read my full profile before applying, I am a special boy looking for a special home.

Hello, my name is Dustin.

I came into the sanctuary because my owner had to surrender me after just two weeks of being in the home due to them being allergic. I had a home previous and was sadly sold online so have already had a few homes at such a young age so now I am ready to find my forever home!

As you can see I am such a cute boy with big ears which I haven’t quite grown into yet but my carers think its a very cute look on me! I am such a sweet loving and confident boy and really love cuddles and being held like a baby. I am quite gentle and chilled a lot of the time but I do also have a playful side and sometimes I can get a bit boisterous when playing and can nip when I get over excited. I have mixed with some younger cats here at the sanctuary and I do really want to play with them but unfortunately not all of them have liked me because I really enjoy rough and tumble play and can be too boisterous for some cats although some of them have been more tolerant of me and will play back. I just really want a young cat friend/s to play with to release some of my playful energy.

When I first came here, I was riddled with fleas and also had a bad case of ear mites. I was treated for this and am now flea/ mite free, however I do need strong preventative veterinary prescribed flea and mite treatments as I am more prone to getting ear mites again. These are easy to purchase from your vets. I do still get dirty ears sometimes, although they are so much better than they originally were, and no longer irritate me! However, it does mean that my new owners need to be happy to keep an eye on my ears and clean them every week or so when needed.

Whilst here at the sanctuary, I sadly had a bit of an upset tummy for a couple of weeks so I had some tests done. I was found to be positive for Feline Coronavirus. (This is in no way associated with the human virus!) Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) is very common, and over 40% of cats will be infected with this in their lifetimes. Most cat owners would never even know if their cat had this, as they often remain healthy and show no symptoms. It is spread through contact of infected faeces, and very common in multi cat households. I am now doing well and after being on a special sensitive diet for a few weeks, I am now being weaned back onto an ordinary diet. It will be suggested by my carer that I stay on the same brands of food that I am eating now as I do have a bit of a sensitive stomach.

Any potential owners will need to do some research into Feline Coronavirus and ensure they understand it and any symptoms that could be related to the virus should I become unwell in the future. Most cats with coronavirus will live happy, healthy lives, just with the odd flare ups of upset tummies (like I had), this will usually be brought on by periods of stress.

I can live with older children 12+ that would be fine with my occasional boisterous playful side. I could possibly live with a calm cat friendly dog. I do need to go to a home with another young confident cat or cats already in the home that will want to play with me and put up with my boisterous playful side and also put me in my place if needed. I will not be homed with older, quiet cats because I will just torment them!

My carers know that we may be waiting for a very special person/ home to come for me because of the virus that I have. But I am hoping that it won’t put everyone off me, as the humans keep telling me that it is not often that cats are tested for the virus (only if showing symptoms) and that there are lots of cats that will also be positive for it, but nobody knows because they have not had the special test. So, there is also a chance that if you already have a cat or more that they have possibly already come into contact with the virus in their lives. I would be happy if you do your research into the virus, as it is becoming more common and it is good for lots of people to know more about it.

I would be happy to be kept as an indoor cat as I’ve never actually been outside, however I must have sufficient space in the home and lots of toys to keep me entertained. I could also be allowed SAFE outdoor access but I must be kept strictly indoors for at least 8 weeks. This must not be on OR NEAR any main/busy or fast roads or near any railway lines. Road/ home checks apply.

If you feel you can provide me with a suitable home then please enquire.
