Second foster - home found!

Post by Crewella »

I have a couple of permanent foster cats, but I'm new to 'proper' temporary fostering in a pen, and I think I've been very, very lucky with my first couple of inmates.

My first foster cat, Coco, was an absolute delight who, in spite of being black and older, found a lovely new home in about a month. Perfect timing from a selfish point of view - long enough to have got to know her, but not so long that I'd really bonded with her. I was worried that I'd really struggle to let the foster cats go when the time came, but I could see that Coco's new home was perfect for her, and off she went.

So, with an empty pen, I got a call at the end of last week from the rescue about a cat that had been hanging around a hospital car park, and within an hour I had my second inmate - a tall, lanky black boy with the biggest, whitest teeth I've ever seen, kind of like a feline version of Rylan Clark. Took him to the vets on Monday (even the vet went 'woooooo' at his teeth) and found he was chipped! I also discovered he was male - up until then I'd thought he was a girl ...... ooops ...... new to this - never really had to look before ..... how embarrassing!

The owner has been found, and it turns out he's been missing for a few weeks and they're very pleased to have him back. Which is brilliant! :D

I'm very, very grateful that my introduction to 'proper' fostering has been so very positive. I'm sure things won't always be so easy, but I've no doubt that we made the right decision. :)

Inmate number 3 now installed.

Big tabby tom cat, youngish, covered in ticks and fleas and very scared indeed. He's just like Daz was when he first arrived - very passive but stressed, trembling and panting. He had a very stressful 24 hours having been caught, kept overnight in a strange kitchen, a couple of trips in a car, a vet visit and then being shoved in a strange pen, so I've left him in peace today. He has now eaten, and used his tray, so hopefully he'll be OK. He should be feeling better already - the vet removed the bigger ticks and the rest should drop off now he's been treated.

He's a really lovely boy - I'll try to get a pic of him if/when he emerges from his house. It's probably because the way he is reminds me of Daz ...... but I'm quite smitten. :)

poor boy :( but he's now in a safe place and hopefully it won't be long before he's a happy little chap and finds the perfect forever home.

Does he have a name?

The lady who caught him called him Baxter.

I was surprised to find him out and about this morning - he was sitting on the top shelf of his scratching post tower. Still very subdued and trembly, but he leaned into my hand for a stroke and didn't try to hide at all. It's hard to find somewhere to stroke him, as many of the ticks were on his head and neck and a couple of the sites were infected (vet gave him an AB shot) - thankfully his chin was OK and he seems to like a chin scratch. :)

Awww he's lovely. Yes Baxter is a great name. Poor boy has been through so much already. It's very positive that he's had a mini explore so far today and that he responds to your affection.
