What shall I feed my cats ???

Post by Nettybags »

Hello everybody ,
Can anyone advise me on what food I should feed my cats . Thomas had acute kidney failure a few years ago due to a reaction to a drug vets gave him . When he was in having bladder stones removed . We were very lucky and he recovered well and was put on renal food .
Five years on and Tom got more stones and had surgery to remove them . No problems after surgery but vet has suggested cd stress food .
I'm not sure what to do .. What if I stop renal and his kidney fail ? Or what if stones come back .
What if I feed him chicken or tuna ?
And to all you very kind people that helped me when my kitty was ill , she seems much better . We need to go bk to vets for xray in a few to check her lungs .
It's been a stressful few months and I have bags bigger then suitcases under my eyes !! But I adore them .

Thanks xxxx

You could always compromise and feed senior food. James Wellbeloved fish flavour is only 0.5% phosphorus. Most renal food is between 0.3% and 0.5% - regular adult food is usually around 1%

Another good one to try is Sanabelle Urinary (From Zooplus) - (0.6% phos) Apparently it helps prevent struvite and oxalate stones. Also it is wheat-free. Be warned it smells rank, but lots of cats love it :) - happy to send you a bit to try if you PM your address (also the JWB fish flavour)

I've found senior foods have helped cats with kidney problems too. Felix senior has been pretty good and is easy to source.

Most of the prescription foods for renal care do seem to be pretty unpalatable. I bought loads and found cats would only eat them when they were fit and healthy - as soon as I had a cat with renal problems, their appetite waned and they woudn't eat the prescription diet!

MarkB has been a great help in finding foods that might help! xx
