Good chat with the vet is in order, hopefully if it is Pica once his body is back at full strength that particular habit will go away. I'm very taken with Pugwash

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
Me too!
Whatever he's eating, he's definitely looking better. At last his fur is starting to feel like fur and he's definitely filling out.
He's the hardest cat to photograph that I've ever had, as he doesn't stay still for a minute! Sorry they're not great pics!

He has the run of the bathroom and a sort of middle landing now, and he now seems to be using his tray like a good boy and not the carpet. I've given him Minnie's old heated bed as his ears always seem to feel cold, and he definitely approves of that!

Oh my, what a transformation again !
Pugwash looks amazing with such alert, healthy eyes, compared to his very first photo, you have really done him so proud, heaven knows where he would be if you had not have taken him in.
A huge well done to you for giving this now handsome fella a life again.....xx

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
I guess I advertised my sell-by date when I named him!
He's settled nicely into the bathroom/landing and seems to be regularly using his tray properly now. I'm sure he's very pleased to see the back of that crate, as am I.

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
I just took him up some cat milk - he loves his milk. Mind you, as with so many ex-strays, he loves pretty much anything!

I'm glad I've taken pics every few days - you really can see how much he's improving.

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
I've just got back from the vets .... and no wonder he's looking better - since I've had him he's doubled in weight from 1.7kg to 3.5kg!
He does have thickened guts which point to malabsorbtion issues, and we're sending off a stool sample to look into that. (If I can get one before he eats it ......

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
Wow, that's some difference!
Are the thickened guts due to his age or previous poor diet? Whatever the cause, I hope you can get it sorted. Fusses to the little fella

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
It could be an IBD type thing, possibly caused by his poor diet. It could be cancer.
I'm ignoring the cancer possibility - both the vet and I agree that if it is, it is and he'll be OK until he's not, and then we'll help him as best we can. He's too old and has been through too much to start down that route.
If it's IBD, then it might to some degree settle now he's on decent regular food. My old Minnie had IBD (and thickened gut walls) for several years and died at 19.5, so I'm on fairly familiar territory there - we went from special foods to probiotics to steroids to (eventually) leukeran in her last few months. At the moment, the sensitive diet is helping and his poo is actually looking better each week - fingers crossed. The last few offerings have almost been brown instead of the nasty pale yellow he was originally depositing. The fact that his weight has increased so dramatically also shows that he is at least processing some of it!

I have been following the saga of Pugwash with interest. He is so much like Shrek, the stray we took on a couple of years ago. This is a heart warming Xmas tale , more news & photos please!

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
We've been on operation Pugwash poowatch the last couple of days. I know for a fact that all poos have been disposed of uneaten!
His breath is still foul, but better - he's going in for his dental in a couple of weeks.

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
I know - the whole thread went a bit TMI, but that's Pugwash's fault!
By the way, apparently THE definitive tune is, apparently:
Diddle-de-dum de-diddle-de-dum dada dada DADA da da.... as here at 3.51!

That's fantastic Helen, what a relief!! A proper diet and TLC are doing wonders for this old chap, you can see the improvement yet again in the last picture you posted.

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
I'm sticking to the RC Sensitivity and Purina sensitive dry for now, as they do seem to be working. I suspect that, to some degree, he needs a bit of time and stability to let his system settle naturally and get as good as it can from just regular and proper food. We can then have a look at how far short of 'normal' he is, and then deal with that. For now, he's improving - his poos are getting a bit darker, he's always using the tray, he's not eating them, and they are properly formed. *TMI warning* - they still smell weird - sort of sweet and more like cow poo than cat poo.
Awww ........ if ever a cat deserved a fan club!
xx
I wasn't far off, Nannymcfee - I posted that at 2.11am!

Re: Ooooops ...... one more foster!
It was a quiet night, so I let Pugwash downstairs to meet the others. He's deaf as a post, so I was a bit worried, but it seemed to go OK - he bowls up to them until he can see, clearly, that they're hissing .... and then toddles off again.
Daz and Merrick sniffed him and looked a bit bothered at first, but then ignored him, Basil and Grumpy Nellie hissed if he got too close and then went off to hide. I feel a bit sorry for them as they've only just got over having another cat in the house that didn't work out (Baxter), so even though he just went and sat on the sofa, I put him back upstairs after a couple of hours to stop the rest feeling stressed.
It felt like a good start, though, and bless him, Pugwash purred for almost the whole two hours - he was absolutely thrilled to be down with us.

Looking very much at home there on your sofa and I can see that's he's starting to fill out too
He sounds like he just loves being with you, two hours purring has to be a good sign. Keeping paws crossed the intros continue to go well.
