Insurance and pre-existing possible heart murmur

Post by psmithaitchison »

So, I found out today that my cat's previously diagnosed heart condition is not covered in our policy because it was diagnosed whilst we had a lesser policy (only covering each lines for 365 days).
Aside from the fact that I feel like the worst, most irresponsible cat owner, ever, is there any hope of getting a policy that will cover his condition, should he need treatment, in the future? The vet only found a slight trace of a murmur but as it's on his notes, we have to declare it. He has no symtoms, is not being treated and is just being monitored (every six month check ups)
From what I've found, no one will insure pre-existing so I'm basically waiting for my cat to get ill and then be told I can't afford to keep him well / comfortable / alive.
Of course, there's a chance he could be fine but I'm a worrier :(
Also, does anyone know the rough costs of possible treatments? Beta blockers, scans etc?
Thanks everyone.

Sadly, no insurance company will cover it. I can't help with costs I'm afraid, none of my cats with heart murmurs have ever had any treatment. Buster has had his heart scanned 3 times, it's been around £100 each time, but he normally has other organs scanned at the same time.

there's a hundred other conditions he could get which would have nothing to do with his heart murmur, so I'm sure you could find a company to insure him with an exclusion for any treatment connected with the murmur

you're more likely, I suspect, to find a big company like PetPlan to oblige, as they have been in the pet insurance business for a long time, and will have the expertise and experience to be more flexible

it'll cost nothing to ask - good luck

I'll give them a ring tomorrow, thank you.
As an aside, we got him when he was three, and have no medical / vets records for him, before that. I know that insurers ask for full medical history when you make a claim, but we don't have that, only since he's been in our care.
could this prove to be a problem?
