Urgent advice needed cat with mouth ulcers

Post by railwaycats »

I'm new to this forum and after two weeks of constant vet visits, I think I need to actually talk to people who really understand and love cats. My cat Bernard had a high temp and was just not right, after lots of prodding they found he had mouth ulcers. He was given an injection to last two weeks for secondary infection and metacam for pain relief. Just been back today as I'm not happy at all. He hasn't eaten a thing and at the vets today they basically gave him a vit b12 injection and baytril and I'm to return Friday to decide his fate!! I feel quite upset at this and disgusted with the vet. I am sure if I can get him to eat, his body will be able to attempt to fight this virus??. He is really good with me and I am syringing him recovery food (watered down) little at a time and I'll stay up all night if I have to. Has anybody had any experience with this type of problem before as I really could do with advice. Thank you in advance.

I once had a cat with a severely ulcerated tongue who couldn't eat, but she was able to lap liquidised food - I laced everything with lamb's liver as she was very fond of it and it has a strong smell

but is there some underlying condition behind these ulcers? I would have thought yes and you need a firm diagnosis - don't hesitate to ask to be referred to your nearest vet hospital if you aren't satisfied with the answers you are getting

Thank you Kay for getting back to me so quickly. I'm seeing a different vet on Friday after a phone call saying I wasn't happy. For an update, after syringing about 20ml of recovery food over a few hours he has decided to eat a couple of mouthfuls of canagan wet food tuna with prawns and have a drink out of his fountain. Fingers crossed he is on the up. I will continue with the syringe feeding until I see him eating with gusto! I will keep you posted just in case it might help others. Thank you again

Sadly I had to take Bernard to the emergency vet. There was indeed something more going on and I was really worried and couldn't wait til the morning. He was hooked up to a drip and then prodded and poked and blood taken. Bernard has since been diagnosed with FIV BUT he is doing great and will be home tomorrow with medication for the rest of his life (I think). He was stray and in a very bad way when he came to me (4 years ago) and has been a house cat ever since. I am pleased that I trusted my gut and didn't stick with the same vet and indeed their baytril dose. Now I just need to feed my boy up and give him lots of love. Can't wait til tomorrow :D

So pleased to see that Bernard is feeling better and has had a proper diagnosis so you know what your dealing with. Hope he continues to recover from the painful ulcers poor boy. I believe there is a forum on Catchat for owners of fiv cats too. :)

Just a thought, but a few owners of cats with stomatitis/gingivitis have found that feeding Butchers Classic tinned cat food has helped as, cheap and cheerful though it is, it has no sugars or additives (or cereals) that can sometimes irritate an already painful condition. Might be worth a try for your boy?
