Mimi diagnosed with Anemia
Mimi diagnosed with Anemia
Hi all, our Mimi is 4 years old. She surprisingly stopped eating 2 days ago. The vet diagnosed her with anemia and gave her steroids, so far no reaction
Her results are
PCV 29%
FeLV and FIV snap test negative
Who has a tip what to do or a perspective on the results.
Thanks in advance
Dieter

Re: Mimi diagnosed with Anemia
Hi
I don't want to worry you unduly, but anemia (and the resultant lethargy) was the only symptom my 5yr old Badger displayed when he developed cancer of his spleen. He had passed his annual vet inspection 6 weeks earlier. Tumor only showed up (faintly) when my vet did a scan. I very much hope Mimi is not suffering from this as the outlook is grim (Badger died within 3 days of diagnosis).

Re: Mimi diagnosed with Anemia
Did the vet say anything about her glucose levels, they look high? Buster had anaemia, his was initially thought to be liver related so was treated with steroids before I adopted him, I stopped them and they improved, not sure the vet found a cause.
Re: Mimi diagnosed with Anemia
As with in humans, I'm sure this could be a sign of a number of things, not always really serious, non-curable conditions either.
I was reading about diabetes in cats earlier (my cat has a weight issue) and anaemia was a symptom of this which would also tie in with the high glucose levels, so as booktigger said, this may be something worth asking the vet.

I also noticed a very low platelets count and unless a note about any aggregation has been added somewhere, this might be another issue to take care of.
Just out of curiosity, you say that Mimi is 4 yo, the report says 5y2m?

Re: Mimi diagnosed with Anemia
That's quite interesting - they say no skin tenting (which is a symptom of dehydration) - yet treated for dehydration. I'm also not convinced their blood taking skills are good if they require sedation just due to growling and swiping, I've had cats react worse than that for blood taking and been done while they were awake. Unfortunately what they don't show on any of their results, and is worth asking, is what the PCV range is - each lab has slightly different results, but for some, 29% is normal, so if you ask what their range is, you can see how severe that number is. Going off her urinalysis, the anaemia could be caused by a urine infection, which Buster also had at the same time as his anaemia. I'd ask if they are treating that.

thanks I will ask them tonight
Re: Mimi diagnosed with Anemia
Mimi is at home again. Her PCV value was 39 % again yesterday. She ate yesterday afternoon as well. Supposedly the anemia was caused by toxins and could be gone now. We received predicnare tabs, which we have to give her 1 a day. This morning she drank in front of us, but did not eat. She is livelier than before but not normal. We have to wait if she recovers, we have our fingers crossed. Any more ideas, what we could do?

Did you ask about the urinalysis results? Good that her PCV is up and she is livelier in herself

Re: Mimi diagnosed with Anemia
I'm glad that Mimi is feeling a bit better now. Fingers crossed she keeps improving.
Did the vets tell you to have more tests in the next days?
