I am wondering if my two 5 mth old sibling kittens will ever have a preference on which litter box they use. I have two decent sized boxes and they both get used but also shared. Sometimes one kitty will wait outside a box until the sibling has finished his business then go into the box that has just been used rather than using the vacant box.
They don't have a preference on which box to use, if three boxes are set they still wait until first one has finished it's business and use the same box..
Will they ever develop a preference to their own boxes?

Re: Kittens sharing same litter box
my two much older cats have always shared a litter box, so I give them a king-sized one and fill it with more than the recommended litter
but I'm home all day and can keep the box cleaned out as and when needed - if I'm away for more than 12 hours I put out a second box, which is often not used - I think it's just that cats are creatures of habit, and don't really take to multi-choice
why not leave them to share, but up the box size and amount of litter in it as they grow?

Re: Kittens sharing same litter box
My Badger and Tilly always shared a litter box as kittens. They may of had two boxes, but only ever used one!

When I had 2 cats they shared. I remember my first 2 cats, one female the other male, and the lad would use the box - straight in and out, no covering. The female used to walk up to him, give him a clout and go dust round the outside then hop in and cover it up!
